Travel & Style Magazine
Caravan Magazine is UC Berkeley’s premier travel magazine, sponsored by the ASUC. Started in the spring semester of 2019, we are currently in our seventh semester of production, with the first six issues released and available to read in their entireties here on our website.
Caravan is UC Berkeley's only travel magazine, for which all staffers travel in a group to report on locations determined each semester. It is Caravan Magazine’s mission to offer travel-minded students the opportunity to create, and in this process of creation, to grow as artists and collaborators. Our 25-person team is made up of exceptional writers, photographers, videographers, and designers who dedicate 3+ hours per week to the club over the course of a semester. If you’ve been looking for a publication here at Cal where you can develop your creative skills in a nurturing space, we highly encourage you to apply.
Socially, we love hanging out together, and many of us find our close friends through the organization. An undeniable part of this closeness is our semesterly retreat, wherein every Caravan member travels to one destination together. On retreat, we accumulate thousands of miles with the club over Labor Day weekends in the fall and Presidents’ Day weekends in the spring, living together for those three days per semester. After retreat, we enjoy our date parties, tea tastings, day trips and more.
The Caravan semester usually follows the following chronology: article ideation and location pitching, traveling, drafting, refining, and publishing. While editors get to determine the direction of their articles, photographers and designers have free rein in bringing that direction to life. Throughout the semester, Caravan members have many opportunities to consult the rich network of talent in the club, no matter the department or expertise.
Photographers and designers are expected to be proficient in (or willing to quickly learn) their own proprietary hardware/software. If you would like to apply for photography but are concerned about equipment, we usually have photographers who are more than willing to share their cameras. We also love including film photography in the magazine. The photo editing process is usually done in Lightroom, and the design process is done in InDesign. Note: we frequently accept designers without InDesign experience if we can tell you have a great eye, so don’t let a lack of experience deter you from applying!
